I feel for every child who has had to cancel their party plans. On top of the school closures, cancelled sports, activities and play dates, a cancelled birthday party feels like the cherry on top of a disappointment sundae. While a cancelled birthday party can hit kids (and parents) hard, that doesn’t mean you still can’t still make their day just as special.

I’d like to share with you a few ways we’ve seen social distancing birthdays and hope they spark an idea to make your little one’s birthday as memorable and special as they are.

Ask Friends and Family to Send Birthday Videos

Imagine waking up on your birthday to a dozen video messages from your friends and family. Although they can’t be together physically, seeing their friends in a video on Mommy or Daddy’s phone can bring a huge smile to their faces. Ask Grandma to read your child’s favourite story to them on video or just sing happy birthday.

Plan an Online Party

Invite friends and family to participate in an online party via zoom, or some other group conversation platform. They’ll feel so special hearing everyone sing happy birthday simultaneously over the computer or TV (if you’re screen casting). If family members have sent gifts in advance, they’ll love watching your child open their presents live on camera.

Play Birthday Party

We’ve put together some fun birthday party packages that inspire kids to celebrate and continue with pretend play long after their birthday. Our pretend play birthday party kits include a wooden birthday cake, balloons, party hats, noise makers and a special birthday book written by a local children’s book author. Check them out here.

Invite Your Child’s Favourite Superhero or Princess to the Party

Several entertainment companies are now offering virtual birthday parties or private video chats with characters. Forever Fairest and Minikinz are two local companies providing this service. Imagine your child’s delight when they realize they get to have a video conversation with Elsa or Batman! Now that’s a birthday they’ll be talking about for a long time!

Order Your Child’s Favourite Deserts

Does your little one have a favourite treat destination in Burlington? Several restaurants are offering contactless delivery and curbside pickup. While you may not be able to dine out, you can still get your child’s favourite mouth watering treat for their special day.

Decorate Your Home with Balloons

Several balloon companies, such as Ettridges, have been decorating homes with balloons, providing children (and adults) with a festive way to celebrate their special day, and letting neighbours know you’re celebrating too.

Make the Day All About Them

Let your child choose how they’d like to spend their special day. Do they want to build a fort in the backyard? Do some crafts? Watch their favourite movie on repeat? Give your little one creative license to spend their day however they’d like. After all, it’s their special day!
